Sligo Spurs Latest News Archive

This is where we store old news stories that we used to have on this site in the past.

2017-18 Sligo Spurs News

Just a quick note to say that our season at Wembley has once again proved to be very exciting, after some initial doubts! A great Champions league campaign, with memorable victories over the holders Real Madrid, and Borussia Dortmund along the way. A disappointing exit at the hands of wily old campaigners Juventus shouldn't take away from what was only our third ever venture into the CL.

Lots of club members have been heading over to matches this season, with the wide availability of tickets in the 90,000 capacity Wembley Stadium. Looking forward to getting back to White Hart Lane though, and into what will be a truly fantastic new stadium!

Club Trip 2015/2016

Quick report on the club trip: After being squeezed out to Monday 25th of April with an 8pm kick off, we made the most of our first club trip in a few years. When setting up the trip, we picked a fairly low profile match, which we thought would have no chance of being moved for TV purposes, but we never expected that we would be in the title race!

So despite the result on the night against a spirited West Brom side, the trip was a great success overall. Most of our members flew from Knock on the Sunday, as well as the morning of the game. Staying in the Premier Inn, Stansted, we all headed into the lane on the Stansted Express, and marvelled at the developments taking place for the new stadium.

We did the well travelled path of the Bricklayers, the Spurs shop, and the Bell and Hare (now called the Number 8 or something like that!), and we then made our way into the North Stand/Paxton road.

Alas it was not to be, but I think we can all agree that it's been a fantastic season, and huge congratulations to Leicester City on a remarkable campaign. A quick venture back to the Hotel and we hopped on the plane to Knock again the next morning, in good time for work on Tuesday (for some of us!). Next up is the AGM, so looking forward to seeing everyone there on the 30th in the City Hotel. COYS! We'll keep the updates coming through Malcolm's texts anyway as always.

2012 Christmas Club event

We will be holding our annual Christmas Club celebration on Sunday 16th of December in Connolly's to coincide with the Swansea City game. This year's charity, which was agreed upon at the recent meeting in Carrick on Shannon, is the Northwest Simon Community. The NW Simon Community is a not-for-profit organisation working with those at risk of homelessness in counties Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo, and is an affiliate of the wider Simon Communities of Ireland.

As always there will be lite bites and a few drinks for members courtesy of Gerry and the staff in Connolly's. We are asking that each member contribute 10 euro to the charity fundraiser. This is a voluntary contribution and any amount will be greatly appreciated.

Under Armour and Spurs: Road to Glory

Spurs and UA have just launched the Road to Glory activity which basically invites Spurs fans to take up various challenges and to submit their entries to the Road to Glory website. They have to recreate certain historic moments from Spurs history and gain followers to move onto the next challenge.

We are looking for a few members to be part of the Sligo Spurs entry, so if interested contact John Heraghty on 086 6052114 or email johnheraghty@gmail.com (or pop into Connolly's on Sunday where myself and Malcolm will be watching the West Ham game).

The first task is to recreate Klinsmann's famous overhead kick and legendary diving celebration from 1994 - we video the recreation and post it to the event website.

Would be a good laugh and a good chance to get the club's name out there!

2012 Annual General Meeting

Our Annual General Meeting for 2012 was held in the Sligo City Hotel on Tuesday 22nd of May. The meeting minutes are available here

Regional Club Meeting - Carrick on Shannon, Co. Leitrim

As you will have seen in the recent newsletter, we are holding our next club meeting in Carrick on Shannon on Saturday 20th of October. The meeting will take place at 12pm in Murtagh's Bar, Main street, where we will then watch the Spurs v Chelsea game immediately afterwards (12.45 k.o.).

For members travelling from Sligo, a group of us will be getting the 11am train from MacDiarmada station, and we then have a number of options for the return train back to Sligo later that day.

Day return fares to Carrick are €18 and there is a choice of five trains to get back to Sligo between 3pm and 9pm.

Many thanks to Tommy and James Martin for arranging the Carrick meeting and venue. We hope we can spread the spirit of the lane to the greater north-west area, and possibly discover some more Tottenham Hotspur enthusiasts!

Finally, many congratulations to Sligo Rovers F.C. on capturing their first League of Ireland title since 1977 in dramatic fashion at the Showgrounds last Saturday. That's the only reference to any bit of red allowed on this site :-).

Supporters Club Night and Club Trip report April 2011

We had our annual club night in Connolly’s bar on Wednesday April 20th for the big north London derby. A thrilling encounter at the lane and once again it was great to see the lads come back from a two goal deficit against the gunners. As it turns out, a draw wasn’t much help to either team, but great to see Van der Vaart back on song and Aaron Lennon at his flying best.

We also had our club trip recently, which was once again a great success. It was the premier league game at home to Stoke City, and having just exited the Champions league after a thrilling maiden campaign, the park lane were in full voice on a gloriously sunny day in N17. The Premier Inn Eustace was the base camp once again, with the Spurs Megastore, Bricklayers and Bell & Hare the stop off points on the matchday itself.

The 2011 AGM is once again upon us, and as well as the renewal of memberships etc. we would like to draw particular attention to the club officer postions for the coming season. As has been stated before, Malcolm is going to step down from the secretary’s role after four years of tremendous work and dedication, possibly to move over into the PR side of things. We will have the full agenda of the meeting on this website as always prior to the meeting taking place.
